Well, maybe, who knows. But he was recently inducted into Fresno State's Hall Of Fame and that gave his ESPN buddies a chance to give him some good natured ribbing:

ryan matthews out shouldn't be a lead story
look, i know this is a sports blog, but dammit, whether or not ryan matthews plays this weekend is not a top story or breaking news. damn you channel 30. you ran this story @ 5:05 pm. that's pretty high up on the list. it shouldn't be.
i admit, i do not care about fresno state football. or baseball. maybe basketball, if they were good, but only if they make it to the ncaa tournament. even though i don't like these teams, i understand that fresno does care about fsu football.
tell the story in the sports section of your newscast. it doesn't need to be a breaking story. have some perspective.

"i'm not a role model"
for those that don't know, the title phrase was proclaimed by charles barkley during his nba career, but today i think we still have to ask how much does character count in sports? what really matters? is it just winning, a la the old raiders motto of 'just win baby?' or, should we expect all of our athletes to be role models? or something in between.
two things to consider, and i would appreciate you reading/checking them out and then entering into discussion with me:
friend of the sports blog adam wall has a good, thought provoking piece up about the effort to suspend larry johnson indefinitely and keep him from being the top chiefs rb ever and the reaction of a yahoo sports blogger.
heather mclane of the beehive presented a story about a women's soccer player that was clearly playing outside of the rules of the game and only received a yellow for some vicious tackles and atrocious behavior. fortunately, the player involved has been suspended indefinitely by her school.
where do we draw the line? yes, the reason that we are watching sports is for enjoyment, and, hopefully our team will win. should i care that leonard little killed a woman in a d.u.i. accident and is still playing professional football? should i care that ty cobb was a racist? or, do i just care that leonard little gets sacks? what say you?

espn takes notice of fresno
over at the beehive the do a re-occurring post called 'did they just say fresno?' it's a good little feature, and often highlights ways that fresno is being noticed by the world at large. well, they missed one, and i thought i'd post it.
i was watching espn's e60 on tuesday, november 3rd, and one of the stories near the end really caught my attention. here it is:
that's right, mutton bustin @ the big big big big big fresno fair. take notice fresno, we are on espn's radar.

nick watney is on fire
you go, nick watney. sure, most everyone was there to see tiger woods, but you tied the course record at the hsbc champions.
now, i don't know anything about that tournament, but it's still impressive. keep up the good work. tame the tiger. get your win on.

he hates these shoes
local baller, deshawn stevenson, doesn't like teammate mike miller's shoes. why? well, they are the lebron james shoes, and king james has a habit of bitch slapping the wizards every year in the playoffs. so, deshawn dropped some knowledge regarding the shoes,
"He got to get them out of here,' Stevenson told the Washington Post. 'LeBron shoes — we off that. We already got war against them. He can’t wear that. It’s all beef right there.”
i wonder if his teammate complained about his neck tattoo? i wonder if he just disregarded the advice? because i would. i mean, how can you take anything serious from a guy with lincoln tatt'ed on his neck surrounded by 5's?
me, i'd just tell the guy to stop wearing those shoes because they're sorta ugly.

week 8 nfl recap
oh week 8, i will remember you fondly. why? well, the rams finally won! st. louis ended their 17 game skid, and got their first win of the season. and now to the rest of the week in brief fashion.
texans crush bills. bills still suck.
bears crush browns. browns still suck.
cowboys crush seahawks. seattle not as good as their fans hoped. and, they're only one win better than the rams. this makes me happy.
colts squeak by 49ers. manning & co. do just enough to get by. or, the 49ers played the colts tough. i'm not sure which one it is.
dolphins over jets. who owns ny? miami does. twice now. rex ryan's players may love him, they need to back it up with more wins and consistency.
eagles crush giants. well, at least one philly team won tonight. philly fans, how do you do it? two weeks your team lost to the raiders and looked terrible, today you're beating a possible contender.
ravens end broncos win streak. in other news, i wish i played joe flacco instead of kurt warner in one of my fantasy leagues.
titans roll on jags. this game was crazy in that you had one rb (chris brown) run for 228 yards and 2 td's, and the guy on the other side (mjd) put up 177 and 2 tds and should have done more but for some dumb reason his coach got all pass happy, which wasn't working.
chargers beat raiders. ladanian scored two td's, but it was against the raiders. i don't get the raiders, one week they beat philly, next week the lose miserably.
vikings & favre take down the packers. seriously, favre looks pretty good right now.
panthers run rampant on the cardinals. both of carolina's running backs ran for over 100 yards. pretty tough to win when you let the opposition run wild.
saints win in a shoot out over falcons.
